A Whole Bunch of Random

So I just got a chance to watch the Cubs documentary on HBO. I guess I wasn't sure what to expect out of the show, but it definitely exceeded expectations.

I knew I'd see Bartman...I knew I'd see Leon Durham pulling a Bill Buckner (or was Bill Buckner pulling a Leon Durham)....I knew I'd see the black cat running in front of Ron Santo in the on deck circle, and I knew that I'd see that G D billy goat.

Fortunately there were other terrible stories about the Cubs that this documentary brought up...such as the "College of Coaches." For those of you that do not know about this look it up...the story is actually too stupid for me to mention on this blog. Yep, the blog that works hard enough for a blog every few months (or a few years, not to mention the most insightful Puppy Bowl coverage on the web) doesn't want to take the time to tell you the reason why the Cubs weren't contenders during the early 60's, despite Ernie in his prime.

If you are a Cubs fan, definitely take the time to watch this though...oh bring your Kleenex though.

Speaking of the Cubs...the 06 season mercifully ended 4 days ago, and since the season ended (thank Christ) everything has worked out perfectly for the Cubs...and all this means is that we'll F it up.

In case you aren't too concerned about the Cubs or if you just woke up after a dose of HiberNol, here's the Cliff's Notes version of what happened and what it means.

What Happened
  • MacFail (thanks goatriders) resigned.
  • Dusty didn't get his contract renewed.
  • NL Manager of the Year, Joe Girardi got fired by the Marlins.
  • Rothschild and the rest of the coaching staff are "free to go".

What it Means

The Cub franchise is something that millions of people nationwide...hell worldwide are proud of, despite decades of atrocious seasons. In my completely biased opinion, there is no other franchise in sports history whose fans have been as involved throughout their history as the Cubs...therefore who should run the ball club...yep you guessed it. Here's my idea and I think every Cub fan would back me up on this one (or at least most of it).

President- Steve Stone. Outside of Pete Gammons no one knows or respects the game as much as Steve Stone. Put him in charge of the entire organization and see what he can do. If Jim Hendry doesn't like it, he can go back to Omaha.

Manager- Joe Girardi. This is a perfect fit for the Cubs, which is probably why the Cubs will hire a cheaper version of Joe Girardi...hey what is Rick Wrona doing these days?

Bench Coach- Ryne Sandberg. The man's Hall of Fame speech should be played at every Little League opening day ceremony across the country...or is Watseka the only town in the country that holds a parade and opening day festivities.

Pitching Coach- Greg Maddux/Rick Sutcliffe. I'm not sure if Greg Maddux wants to be a player/coach, but if he does, the job is his. If he doesn't, we'll go with the Red Baron. Let's just hope that he doesn't teach the pitching staff the dreaded "fake pick off play to third...then to first". As Harry used to tell us, that play went out with "high button shoes." I'm not sure what high button shoes are, but Harry loved him back when he was having relations with Mrs. Busch.

Hitting Coach- Tony Gwynn. You: But Cory, he has no Cubs ties. Me: So. Kid can rake.

Third Base Coach- Anyone not named Wendell Kim. Seriously the only third base coach that was worse was when Stevie Wonder served the position for his son's Little League team in the late 80's. Of course rumor has it that he only coached third for 1/3 of an inning, before they put him in a nearby sandbox and told him to "keep up the good work."

Now on to the Chicago franchise that is a little easier to deal with right now...

Da Bears Da Bears Da Bears Da Bears Da Bears Da Bears.

I really don't know what else to say except that our defense is dominant. For god's sake, we have a rookie 5th rounder who's a back up defensive end that now has 3.5 sacks. For the record, that's two more sacks than Mario Williams.

Oh and a healthy Rex is treating opposing defenses like he was playing at Bloomington South.

Dem Bums

So for those of you that have been out to visit in San Francisco probably knows that this place is Bum heaven...pardon me...Street Person Heaven. I literally pass 5-10 bums a day during my walk from the train station to work. Most of the time it's non-eventful. Other times, they are informative...they know a ton about astronomy out here (Sidenote #1: I was walking to the train about a month ago and a bum laying in the McDonald's parking lot told me, "Look in the sky, it's a quarter moon"...and he was exactly right. It was close to sundown and in the sky was a quarter moon.) Not to mention other times, they lead Kasey and Joe to a strip club to get in cover-free.

Today's Bum of the Day was a guy standing by a Wells Fargo ATM (I'm sure you're proud Nick) banging a broomstick on the pavement. Obviously I was a little uneasy as I approached him, because he had a broomstick. Luckily though he was just a little angry...at someone else.

Questions to No One in Particular

Remember when Randy Moss played in the NFL? He was pretty good. Sidenote #2: I am fully aware that he lives about 30 minutes from me...therefore giving him a chance to shiv me. I doubt he's reading this though.

Am I the only one who thinks that the MLB playoff games start a little too early?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the White Sox used to have a player named Frank Thomas...is he related to the guy that's playing for the A's?

Anyone else excited about another potential Subway Series? Didn't think so.

Does anyone else wonder what nonsense Doc Sailes taught in his P211 class today?

Classic. Welcome back... I laughed, I cried... it was better than Cats.

And for the record, if Rick Sutcliff becomes the Cubs pitching coach, you better make sure he is focused on pitching and not trying to "figure out that thing over there with George Clooney"
